"I know I have the best built Glasair III in the world and I bet my life on it every time I fly, thanks to Phoenix Composites and Stoddard-Hamilton Aircraft." - Chip Beck, Glasair III owner and Stoddard-H amilton demonstration pilot.Since that time, with the help of his coach Rory Moore, Chip won seven state championships in the state of Arizona, and has been a three-time Arizona "Unlimited" Aerobatic champion. He is one of only a handful of pilots that have earned all five of the International Aerobatic Club Achievement Awards, and is the only pilot to win the Walter Tubbs Trophy for Aerobatic Excellence three years in a row.
![]() Phoenix Composites, Inc. has been a sponsor of Chip Beck since the inception of his Glasair III project. Every step of the way, Phoenix Composites was with Chip, providing assis tance with the building of his new Glasair III, N335CB. Since Chip’s plan was to fly aerobatically, a few minor modifications were made to maximize performance as well as safety. An easy-access cowling (for speedy maintenance), inverted oil systems, spades on the ailerons for a quicker roll rate, and a larger rudder for low speed maneuvers were all that were added to this already quite capable aircraft.
Powered by a six cylinder, 300 horsepower Lycoming engine and designed for fast cross country transportation as well, the Glasair III possesses warbird speed and maneuverability. Chip reached speeds of over 335 MPH and pulled up to 8 G’s positive/ 4 G’s negative during his airshow performance. Chip’s goal was to demonstrate the amazing strength and aerobatic capabilities of the Glasair III. Regretfully, he is officially retired from the airshow circuit, but we all agree -- it was a great run! Chip recently modified his aircraft for long-distance personal use. Phoenix Composites has been proud to be a sponsor of this legend in the annals of aircraft show performers.
